Missing, almost

I wrote previously about not being able to find “Sweetened Condensed Milk” anymore in Malaysia. So imagine my delight when Pauline brought this from Bintulu. She said it was priced at about RM2.70 (she wasn’t certain). This particular condensed milk is manufactured in Singapore, and is being stocked in a supermarket in Bintulu! Are we missing something here? I have had some folks telling me that “condensed creamer” and “condensed milk” is exactly the same thing! It’s like saying full cream milk powder is exactly the same as powdered creamer (eg Coffeemate).

Although I don’t normally consume sweetened condensed milk with my coffee, I like to know that should I require it as an ingredient for cakes (eg honeycomb cake!), or when I want to treat myself to local coffee with condensed milk, it’s easily and readily available. I am beginning to think the palm oil lobbyists have their hands in this! Next time you come across a can of sweetened creamer, have a look at the ingredients.

Meanwhile, I am thinking how to get a local supermarket to stock this “luxury” item. Any ideas?

Thanks again Pauline!

I caved, so I’ve opened the can, tasted it, compared it with F&N Vitaminised. Also had a sinful cup of Nescafe Gold with condensed milk, as I’ve run out of local coffee powder. So to make sure I don’t waste, I made my coffee like this:

I actually had a taste of the condensed milk, and unfortunately it really didn’t taste (deliciously) familiar, so I took out F&N’s “vitaminised” (the supposed replacement to condensed milk), and I agree with PJB that the latter does taste better. I now need to get my hands on Milkmaid Condensed Milk!

The comparison:

What do you guys think?

She brought me the better-than-ayam Marina sardines, a certain David Lu’s fish curry rempah, two bars of belacan…; now did I miss out anything?

I just had ayam sardines for dinner tonight. Oh yes, thanks for the belacan as well. Also thanks to Genevie and Teresa for the goodies!

No cows in Spore other than the old, senile ailing one who thought he was God (re. Grads produce geniuses, can have more than 2 kids and yet his son and 1st wife a dr had a mentally challenged albino) Wonder where they got the milk from. China?

OMG! STP, you are indeed suffering from PMS, I hope it will pass soon. IMO, that “senile” MM is definitely not perfect, and Spore owes much of its success to his foresight. Him being blessed with a special needs grandchild was a blessing in disguise as Spore is now in the forefront (in SE Asia) of providing equal access and opportunities for special needs children and the disabled. In my opinion, that “genius” statement was a super blunder alright, but it has “right” itself along the way. It’s a “bigger picture, forest from the trees” kinda thing.

Aiya stp beats me to it… LOts in China…..you want???Send you a List via sms..some Robinson’s warning.

Yes, got the list, thanks. Fortunately, I don’t buy those things in the list. I’m still pondering whether or not to open the can, because for one, it’s a precious commodity to me now, and two, if I open it, and it seems creamier, then I’ll get paranoid I’ll be eating melamine. Just can’t win.

It’s time to import Halal pork and Beer from China..sure they exist there…no wonder the China dolls condensed milk so big hor….got plastic leh..hahahaha

Only you would have access to such data and information! LOL!

Tried it this morning.. Had it with my oats… its a tad watery and the flavour is not the same as the old sweetened condensed milk… dang!!

You know,it’s been so long that I’ve had condensed milk (a la original cap junjung), that I honestly cannot remember its exact taste. The ones that are sold in Singapore are apparently made in Indonesia. Perhaps you can open a can of “F&N” vitaminised, and compare it against Hosen…and see how different they are. Let me know!

  6. PJB Says:

Did that during lunch time.. hehehe, went to the pantry in the office and they had the vitaminised thinggy there for our coffee.. it tasted better than the Hosen.. dang pity.. so it must be a diluted condensed milk in the Hosen or its another creamer thinngy.. the old condensed milk.. very creamy taste and the key test is that it masuk fridge and it remains milky.. not turn into milk candy

Now I am very tempted to open the can of Hosen, but testing with Nescafe not quite accurate (me thinks!). Actually, panggang will do the trick nicely, huh?

  7. PJB Says:

Oh yes, panggang definately… we are terrible, dah the panggang cooked with santan and still want to celup with condensed milk.. thus the size hahaha

All because condensed milk is missing from the shelves!!!

Who would be going to Singapore for the F1? Hmmm

Actually I have a friend going to singapore (not for f1), but I’m rather hesitant to ask, cos I doubt he’ll be too thrilled at having to go to the supermarket to get condensed milk.

That is the good thing about STP’s N Gerrie’s blog isn’t it,or else who would have known Gerrie wanted condensed milk! And I also wouldn’t have known STP smokes Dunhill and loves Walker shortbread. Good thing he did not mention that he smokes some china brand which i learnt from the duty free people that it is the most expensive ones, i think Rm$100++. N STP hope u would wear your I’m on Fiji Time Tshirt, the meaning of that is bcos Fiji people are either very punctual or taking their sweet time but in your case i think, very punctual. So hope u won’t recycle the present esp the shirt becos i personally chose it for u n carry it all the way back to melbourne from Fiji. So it is pure Fiji mind u!LOL!!

Wah, STP, you must wear your fiji t-shirt when you come out to Kuching next. So special, we got fiji pressies wor!!! Thank you again Stella.

TQ again Gerrie and all the other cousins for the laughter and good food.. I was dead tired when I arrived home.

You’re most welcome! Try the F&N Vitaminised as well, as I thought it was more original in flavour. Let me know what you think.

  11. kpenyu2000 Says:

..stella bought Dunhill for stp??? what else did she get wrong???..the condensed milk is best if you mix and serve it with sardines and on toast..try it.

    Thanks, but, no thanks!

..someone gave me thailand green curry paste…I better use it before expiry date..or anyone out there willing to pay reverse courrier charges????

  12. suituapui Says:

    Hmmmm…..recycling presents!

  13. gundot Says:

Hubby bought Parkway RM 22 per carton(10 packets inside) at Sibu market. Want to hisap this brand STP???? BTW, he buy to keep his ‘Kawi” happy.

  14. gundot Says:

It is the coffee that counts not the milk!!!! So how was the hong kong cake?

Speaking of coffee, I had breakfast at this new place called “Sing Garden”, and I ordered “kopi si kau”, and it was the most absolute worst coffee I’ve had. It was like diluted coffee with lots of milk. Food was lousy as well….this went down as a first and last visit.

Didn’t make the honeycomb cake, so nothing to report there!. Will let you know when I make…after the 9th….

  15. PJB Says:

A thought came to mind.. considering that the Condensed Milk in Singapore is made in Indonesia.. do you think we can find it in Serikin? hahahaha..

I have a feeling they have it there…..although my maid recently bought “susu” (actually creamer!), and drank, and didn’t seem to notice any difference. So if you go to Serikin, and you see the real deal, you help me buy half dozen (the big one if they have!!). I guess those folks who orders “gu leng” in coffee shops, are now drinking creamer and sugar……ewwwww!
